Great style is as much having a sound sense of fashion as it is getting with all those new trends before everyone else. Now that the fall and winter collections of most men's labels are firmly on their display mannequins, the trends of the season are beginning to take on clearer shapes. Designer fashion labels are optional if you can spot those trends ahead of time and stock up on style pieces at the nearest brand-less department store.

Trust in Tweed
Low temperatures in winter are one of the few things (short of a financial meltdown) that force the forces of men's fashion to go in a more practical direction. This season, old and new fashion houses alike are flocking to tweed both for the textile's heritage and heft.
Its English roots certainly haven't hampered the spread of tweed as it's becoming all the rage in the U.S. men's fashion scene. There's a lot of tradition to the fabric, so going for a much more modern and fitted cut won't hurt. Keep to the classic single breasted variety, as the DB one might be a little too much nostalgia. And to balance out the strong pattern of the textile, wear it with an understated shirt and a deep, dark necktie to match.
Collect tweed style pieces, as fashion retailers are churning out all sorts of items made of the stuff. Neckties, shirts, vests, jackets and pants have all been done in tweed, and it's a good idea to have at least one of each if you can afford it. Wearing them all together is out of the question, but each one makes a very distinctive addition to any outfit.
Believe in Vests
Sturdier than a second shirt but less constricting than a full-on jacket, vests are something of a fashion in-between for those times when you want to keep warm and flexible. This season, they're no longer limited to the outdoorsman and under-18 set, and have become perfectly acceptable outerwear style pieces for men on their way to the office.
Puffer vests are the items to have this season, and with good reason. They offer a lot more insulation than the thinner varieties, and add a tough guy vibe to your look. Just be sure that the 'puffs' don't go overboard as they often do; you want to look like you're ready for the elements and not as if you're dressed as the Michelin Man. Having a vest that's longer than the layer under it should keep you from stepping into faux pas territory.
A modern twist to this cold weather classic is the play on textures that a lot of men's fashion labels are doing right now. Whether it's a sleek new tech fabric on the inside or a traditional suiting fabric used on the outside, anything that's out of the ordinary textile-wise should add some much needed edge to an otherwise humdrum style piece.
Cling to Cardigans
The cardigan has been around for quite some time, and more than a few male ancestors probably wore one in their day. Cardigans in 2009, however, are more flattering, less stuffy and so much more fun to wear with just about anything you could find.
Pick up a slim fitting buttoned cardigan in black or navy, which you can then layer over everything from a sharp shirt and tie to a faded old band t-shirt. To take the trend to the next level, though, find one with a pattern or - better yet - a loud, eye-catching color. Be warned that either one requires understated pieces like simple shirts and dark neckties so that the limelight isn't stolen away from the star of the show.
While men's fashion marketing will have you believe that you have to get closetfuls of new clothes for the season, all you really need are a few new items. You're not likely to have all these style options in your wardrobe right now, but you'd best get them quick. You wouldn't want to be seen as just another cardigan-wearer in the navy crowd.
